The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.

Watt-hour cap — battery removed into the cabin

「卸下之電池請務必做好絕緣保護並且以手提攜帶方式辦理，不可以行李託運之方式辦理。以手提方式辦理之鋰電池，其瓦特/小時之限制必須≦300Wh/顆。」 — a removed battery must be insulated and hand-carried into the cabin (checked carriage prohibited) and must not exceed 300 Wh each. Removal is required whenever the aid cannot protect the battery adequately, e.g. it is exposed or externally mounted.

Watt-hour cap — spare battery

In addition to any removed drive battery, the passenger may carry one spare of ≤300 Wh or two spares of ≤160 Wh, hand baggage only — 「旅客另可多攜帶1顆 ≦300Wh備用電池或2顆 ≦160Wh備用電池，且同樣必須以手提攜帶上機辦理」. Spares may never be checked.

It depends on the design. If the aid protects the battery adequately (firmly fixed, rigid casing), the battery stays fitted, the chair is checked and there is no watt-hour limit. If the aid cannot protect it — battery exposed or externally mounted — the passenger must remove it, insulate it and hand-carry it into the cabin (≤300 Wh each). For dry-cell, NiMH and non-spillable wet batteries a removed battery goes in a strong package in the hold instead.

Non-spillable wet must meet special provision A67 and packing instruction PI 872 and the aid kept upright throughout; dry-cell must meet A123, NiMH A199. If the aid cannot protect the battery it must be removed, packed in a strong outer package and carried IN THE HOLD (not the cabin); if it stays fitted it must be firmly attached with the circuit isolated per the manufacturer's instructions.

Wet / spillable batteries

溢漏式電池 (spillable wet batteries) appear on UNI Air's list of items prohibited from carriage, under Class 8 corrosives. Its mobility-aid briefing covers only dry-cell/NiMH, non-spillable wet and lithium batteries — spillable types are not among the accepted chemistries.

Every lithium battery needs UN38.3 test documentation; altered or illegible battery labels are refused. The confirmation form asks for the passenger's name and PNR, flight details, the aid's brand, the battery model and type (lithium or non-spillable wet), whether the battery need not be removed or must be removed, and the aid's dimensions in centimetres. UNI Air also advises carrying a copy of the aid's manual for ground staff.

Per-flight capacity for electric wheelchairs is published as ATR 72-600: 2 units; A321: 6 units — the limit is by aircraft, not by passenger. Fleet detail. UNI Air publishes no hold-door dimensions. Instead it caps the number of electric wheelchairs it will load per flight: ATR 72-600 two, A321 six, and warns that mobility aids are subject to unpublished size limits that must be confirmed before departure.

Worth knowing

UNI Air is unusually explicit for a regional carrier: its December 2024 mobility-aid briefing states in writing that a lithium battery that stays fitted to the aid has NO watt-hour limit (鋰電池不拆卸，無瓦特/小時容量限制), caps a removed battery at 300 Wh each (cabin only), and allows one 300 Wh or two 160 Wh spares in the cabin ON TOP of the removed drive battery. THINGS A HUMAN SHOULD RE-CHECK: (1) the 'no limit' claim is immediately qualified by UNI Air's own warning that 「部分機場不接受鋰電池瓦特小時數大於300Wh行動輔具之運送」 — some airports refuse mobility aids over 300 Wh — so a large-battery chair is not guaranteed on every route. (2) 溢漏式電池 (spillable wet batteries) appear on the general prohibited-items list and the mobility-aid briefing covers only dry-cell/NiMH, non-spillable wet and lithium; that is why wet_spillable is recorded as false — other carriers accept spillable wheelchair batteries under IATA special provisions, so confirm if you use one. (3) Powered-wheelchair capacity is per aircraft (ATR 72-600: 2, A321: 6), so two wheelchair users on the same ATR service fill the quota. (4) On domestic flights a powered chair may NOT be gate-checked from the departure lounge; the counter check-in can only be deferred to 20 minutes before boarding, after which you must transfer to a ground-staff wheelchair. (5) For non-lithium chemistries a removed battery travels in the HOLD in a strong package, the opposite of the lithium rule.
