Fragments only. SmartLynx Airlines Malta publishes some assistance information but not a full mobility-aid policy. What is below is everything it actually states. Everything marked “not published” genuinely is — confirm it with the airline rather than assuming the international baseline applies.

Wet-lease / ACMI operator. SmartLynx Airlines Malta usually flies aircraft and crew on behalf of other airlines. If your ticket says another airline, that airline’s wheelchair policy governs your booking — but the aircraft’s physical hold limits are this operator’s.

Customer support — general, not a disability desk. WILL NOT DELIVER: the smartlynx.aero domain returns NXDOMAIN from Google, Cloudflare and Quad9 resolvers (checked 2026-07-29)

Every contact below was published on smartlynx.aero, the site IATA lists for SmartLynx Airlines Malta Limited — but that domain no longer exists in DNS (NXDOMAIN from 8.8.8.8, 1.1.1.1 and 9.9.9.9, checked 2026-07-29), so the e-mail addresses are certainly dead and the phone line may be. Other addresses SmartLynx printed on its contacts page (snapshot 5 Aug 2024): head office SmartLynx Airlines SIA, Mazrudas, Mārupe municipality, LV-2167, Latvia, info@smartlynx.aero; media massmedia@smartlynx.aero; commercial sales@smartlynx.aero. The same page lists "SmartLynx Airlines Malta — Phoenix Business Centre, 2nd Floor, Old Railway Track, Santa Venera SVN 9022" as a group office, with no separate Maltese telephone number or e-mail address. No dedicated disability or PRM desk was ever published.

Powered wheelchairs & batteries

The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.

Powered chairs accepted
Conditional

Accepted only with prior airline approval. SmartLynx's dangerous-goods table lists "Mobility Aids: Battery-powered wheelchairs or other similar mobility devices with spillable batteries or with lithium batteries" as: airline approval required YES; allowed in or as checked baggage YES; allowed in or as carry-on baggage NO. The reduced-mobility page separately requires at least 48 h notice if you bring your own electric/battery-powered wheelchair.

Lithium-ion batteries
Conditional

Lithium-battery mobility aids are carried only with airline approval, in or as checked baggage, never as carry-on (same "Mobility Aids" row).

Watt-hour cap — battery stays in the chair
Not published

No watt-hour cap is published for mobility aids. DELIBERATELY LEFT NULL: the 100 Wh and 100–160 Wh figures on the same page belong to the portable-electronic-device and spare-battery rows, not to the mobility-aids row. ICAO/IATA default applies — see global rules.

Watt-hour cap — battery removed into the cabin
Not published

Not published for mobility aids; SmartLynx does not say whether or when a wheelchair battery must be removed. ICAO/IATA default applies — see global rules.

Watt-hour cap — spare battery
Not published

Not published for mobility aids. SmartLynx's "maximum of two spare batteries above 100 Wh but not exceeding 160 Wh, carry-on only" is a consumer-electronics/medical-device rule and has deliberately not been imported as a wheelchair rule. ICAO/IATA default applies — see global rules.

Spare batteries permittedmaximum number under any published configuration
Not published

Not published for mobility aids. SmartLynx's general limits (up to 20 spare batteries of 100 Wh or less, or two of 100–160 Wh, carry-on only) are portable-electronics limits and are not recorded here.

Battery must be removed
Not published

Not published for mobility aids.

Non-spillable batteriesgel, AGM, sealed lead-acid, dry cell
Not published

Not published. SmartLynx's dangerous-goods table has a mobility-aid row only for spillable and lithium batteries; it carries no row for non-spillable (gel / AGM / dry) wheelchair batteries, so nothing is asserted here.

Wet / spillable batteries
Conditional

Mobility aids with spillable batteries are carried only with airline approval, and only in or as checked baggage — not as carry-on (dangerous-goods table row "Mobility Aids").

Manual wheelchairs

Manual chairs accepted
Yes

"It is possible to travel with a wheelchair on SmartLynx Airlines' flights." Passengers may be taken to the gate in their own chair — "manually powered wheelchairs only" — provided the need is notified at booking and at least 48 h before departure.

Size limit for a checked manual chair
Not published

Not published by SmartLynx; carriage is instead conditioned on the airline confirming there is room in the hold.

Weight limit for a manual chair

Not published by SmartLynx.

Returned at the aircraft door
Not published

Not published for arrival. On departure "the passenger should remain in the wheelchair for as long as possible, preferably up to the door of the aircraft", but where airport lifts or stairs make that impossible the chair is taken to the baggage hall from check-in. SmartLynx says nothing about where the chair is returned after landing, only that staff help the passenger to the arrivals hall.

SmartLynx warns that "for safety reasons and due to the location of the lifts or stairs in the airport buildings, the wheelchair must be transferred down to the baggage hall at an earlier stage", in which case the passenger is moved to an airport wheelchair at check-in. Passengers needing assistance are normally boarded before everyone else and disembarked last.

Booking & cost

Advance notice requiredhours before scheduled departure
48h

"SmartLynx Airlines require information about the need for special assistance at the latest 48 hours before the flight departure" — listed cases include wanting to be taken to the gate in your own (manual) wheelchair and wanting to bring your own electric/battery-powered wheelchair. The airline also asks to be told at the time of booking.

How to request assistance
Declare it when you book — with SmartLynx and/or your tour operator — and in any case at least 48 hours before departure

"We require information about a passenger travelling with a wheelchair when the trip is booked so that we can properly anticipate the need to provide help." Assistance is passed through the reservation system to airline and airport staff. The baggage page adds that for special baggage, which expressly includes "passengers in wheelchairs", "the space must be reserved in advance" via SmartLynx and/or the tour operator.

No number is published. SmartLynx says it "will transport all equipment that a person with reduced mobility needs for their well-being, provided the passenger informs of such equipment at the time of trip reservation, and we are able to confirm that there is room for the equipment in the hold of the aircraft" — a hold-space condition, not a stated cap, so this is not recorded as "no_limit".

If they damage your chair
EU limits under Regulation (EC) No 889/2002 amending Regulation (EC) No 2027/97; no mobility-aid-specific rule

"The airline's responsibility for damage that happens to checked baggage is internationally limited accordingly to Regulation (EC) No 889/2002 … amending Council Regulation (EC) No 2027/97." SmartLynx disclaims minor damage "which does not render the baggage unusable" and lists exclusions (protruding wheels, feet and handles; locks, zips and straps; fragile or sporting equipment; prams and child seats). Wheelchairs are not named in the exclusion list and no full-value mobility-aid waiver is published.

On-board aisle chair
Not published

Not published. SmartLynx describes boarding by lifting chair at the aircraft door but never mentions an on-board aisle wheelchair.

Accessible lavatory
Not published

Not published. SmartLynx says only that a passenger who needs help visiting the toilet must travel with an assistant.

Crew help you transfer
Conditional

Airport and boarding help only: staff assist from check-in to the aircraft and the passenger "will be assisted or carried in a lifting chair onto the aircraft". But "if the passenger needs help in taking medication, eating, visiting the toilet, getting up or communicating in a way that differs from normal, they must be accompanied by a helper/assisting person, because in these instances the airline cannot provide assistance during the flight, except for lifting help at the airport."

Seating & movable armrests
Yes

"Passengers with reduced mobility are assigned a seat in advance, which has an armrest that can be raised and is, wherever possible, next to the aisle to enable easier transfer to and from a wheelchair or lifting chair." They may not sit at emergency exits, and on a full aircraft must take a window seat so they do not block other passengers.

Fleet detail. Carriage of mobility equipment is conditioned on SmartLynx confirming "that there is room for the equipment in the hold of the aircraft". Where several wheelchair users are on one flight, SmartLynx says advance notice matters even more "to ensure that there is definitely enough room in the hold of the aircraft for all of the wheelchairs", and that "because of passenger safety, there is a specified number of passengers requiring special assistance that can be taken on to the same flight" — exceeding it requires clarification of assistants, needs and whether all the wheelchairs can be carried. Fleet described as Airbus A320, A321 and A321F.

Worth knowing

ACMI/WET-LEASE OPERATOR — read this first. SmartLynx's own words (About Us, snapshot 14 May 2025): "We are a globally recognized provider of ACMI, cargo and charter services … Operating a fleet of 67 aircraft and Latvian, Estonian, and Maltese Air Operator Certificates (AOC) … SmartLynx is part of Avia Solutions Group." On a wet-leased flight the CONTRACTING airline's or tour operator's conditions govern the ticket, and SmartLynx itself repeatedly refers passengers to their tour operator for baggage allowances. Treat everything below as the operating carrier's handling policy, not as the contract you bought. SECOND ATTEMPT (2026-07-29) — this record was previously marked "unreachable"; that was partly a search error. The domain really is dead: smartlynx.aero, www.smartlynx.aero, smartlynxairlines.com, smartlynx.eu, smartlynx.lv, fly.smartlynx.aero and smartlynxairlines.aero all return NXDOMAIN from 8.8.8.8, 1.1.1.1 and 9.9.9.9 (checked 2026-07-29); smartlynx.com and smartlynxmalta.com exist but are unrelated parked/lander pages. But the earlier pass concluded the English passenger pages were "last captured in 2019" — that came from reading the first row of a collapsed CDX query. In fact the Internet Archive holds captures up to 8 December 2025 for the reduced-mobility and special-assistance pages, 14 July 2025 for the lithium-battery page and 14 November 2025 for the dangerous-materials page, and those are the sources used here. ENTITY CAVEAT, stated plainly: smartlynx.aero was the group site. Its footer reads "SmartLynx Airlines SIA" with a Latvian address, and its contacts page lists "SmartLynx Airlines Malta" (Phoenix Business Centre, Santa Venera) only as one of the group's offices. This site is nevertheless the website IATA publishes for SmartLynx Airlines Malta Limited, and the About Us page presents the Maltese AOC as part of the same operation, which is why the content has been used — but a wheelchair user should know these words were written for the group, not for the Malta AOC alone. CURRENCY CAVEAT: nothing here is live. The most recent policy snapshot is 8 December 2025 and the site has since disappeared; press reporting (not citable in this dataset) says the SmartLynx group collapsed in late 2025 and the brand was retired, so the Malta AOC may no longer be trading under this name. passenger_service has been left true because no official or regulator source confirming cessation could be found. A human should check the Malta Civil Aviation Directorate AOC register and the IATA member list before relying on this record. THIRD PASS (2026-07-29), freshness re-check of the three oldest citations: the live retry was run again with the upgraded fetcher and failed at the DNS layer, not at a bot wall — smartlynx.aero and www.smartlynx.aero return NXDOMAIN from 8.8.8.8, 1.1.1.1 and the system resolver, the domain has no SOA and no nameservers, and the reader proxy answers HTTP 422 for every path. There is nothing left to fetch live. Two of the three flagged sources were nevertheless pulled forward by searching the archive across SmartLynx's other locale paths, which serve the same English body text: Baggage Info moved from the 2024-12-21 English capture to a 2025-11-14 capture of /ES/passengers/baggage-info (body text identical — same "passengers in wheelchairs" special-baggage rule, same Regulation (EC) No 889/2002 liability wording), and About Us from 2025-05-14 to a 2025-10-15 capture of /de/about-us (body text identical). Contacts stays at the 2024-08-05 English capture because the newer 2025-12-05 /ee/contacts capture drops the +371 60003089 number and the customerservice@smartlynx.aero address altogether. No policy value in this record changed. The 14 November 2025 baggage capture is now the freshest evidence here and sits about ten days before the reported group collapse, so it is very likely the last state of the published policy.
