Powered wheelchairs & batteries

The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.

Every mobility-aid row of RB's dangerous goods table (non-spillable wet / NiMH / dry, spillable, and lithium-ion) is marked "The approval of the operator is required: YES", so a battery-powered chair needs RB's prior approval. Contradiction a human should re-check: the Guide to Dangerous Goods accepts battery-powered wheelchairs with non-spillable wet, NiMH or dry batteries as checked baggage with operator approval, while the Baggage Prohibition & Restriction page lists under "Prohibited Items — must not be carried in your baggage": "WET CELL BATTERIES ... or sealed non-spillable batteries (e.g. wheelchair)". The specific mobility-aid rows of the DG table were used here. Two hard operational limits: RB caps reduced-mobility guests per flight (8 totally immobile on the 787, 4 on the A320, 20 in total), so a late request can be refused for capacity; and any guest who cannot lift themselves, assist in their own evacuation, or fit a life jacket/oxygen mask must buy a seat for an escort. No onboard aisle chair on the A320 fleet. Assistance dogs are not permitted in the cabin at all — they travel in the hold or as manifested cargo. No watt-hour figure is published anywhere for wheelchair batteries. RB does not serve the USA, so there is no DOT CRO page and liability is capped at the Montreal Convention limit.
