Battery-driven wheelchairs are accepted as checked baggage but 'carrier's approval is required' for every battery type, and Lufthansa must first check the device: complete the Information form on Electric Mobility Devices and email it to specialcases@dlh.de so it can decide whether transport is possible.

From 1 October 2025 a wheelchair or mobility aid with a permanently installed, non-removable lithium battery is limited to no more than two batteries of up to 160 Wh each. Bookings confirmed before 1 October 2025, or trips started before that date, are grandfathered and will still be carried. The electric mobility device form repeats it: 'a limit of max. 2 batteries with max. 160 Wh each'.

For batteries designed to be removed (e.g. foldable wheelchairs) the battery must be removed, terminals insulated, individually packed in a protective container supplied by the passenger, and carried as additional carry-on baggage. 'The battery's watt-hour rating must not exceed 300 Wh.'

'A maximum of one spare battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spare batteries each not exceeding 160 Wh may be carried', in the cabin, individually packed in a protective container.

Only where the battery is designed to be removed (e.g. foldable wheelchairs): a removable lithium-ion battery must come out and travel in the cabin; a removable dry/gel battery must come out and travel in strong packaging in the cargo compartment. A wet battery must be removed only if it cannot be carried upright, and then goes as cargo, not with the chair.

'The battery can only be accepted if it can be transported in an upright position. If this is not possible, the battery must be removed and the wheelchair can only be accepted without it' — the battery then travels only as cargo.

For every battery type the terminals must be protected to prevent short circuits, e.g. by being enclosed in a battery container; removed batteries have their terminals insulated (e.g. taped over). Wet batteries must in addition be disconnected.

Lithium-ion batteries must meet the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria Part III, 38.3, with proof at booking or check-in — a manufacturer's certificate or a personal written confirmation. Lufthansa also requires its electric mobility device form (technical details of the device) to be emailed to specialcases@dlh.de in advance; the form's checklist has you confirm that 'the safety data sheet or certificate for air transport of the battery' is attached to that email and that the manufacturer's handbook is available on request.

After landing your own wheelchair is returned either directly at the aircraft or, at the latest, at baggage claim. Return at the aircraft is not possible at Addis Ababa, Asmara, Billund, Cagliari, Catania, Hamburg, Hannover, Nuremberg, Olbia, Palermo, Riyadh, Stuttgart or Valencia.

Your own foldable wheelchair travels free in the cargo hold, and up to two mobility aids may be carried free in the cabin or the hold.

Cargo-door aperture, not a stated maximum chair size. Smallest in Lufthansa's published table is the A320/A321 at 120 cm / 47.2 in high x 182 cm / 71.7 in wide. The table covers A319 and larger only; the wheelchair page separately warns that 'smaller aircraft may have size restrictions, e.g. a cargo door width of only 71 cm'.

At most stations you can use a foldable wheelchair until the gate; at check-in it gets a 'Delivery at aircraft' tag and is loaded directly at the aircraft. On arrival it is returned at the aircraft or at the latest at baggage claim — but NOT at the aircraft at Addis Ababa, Asmara, Billund, Cagliari, Catania, Hamburg, Hannover, Nuremberg, Olbia, Palermo, Riyadh, Stuttgart or Valencia.

Strictest published deadline: for travel to/from the USA, 'Please phone us at least 72 hours before your flight on 1-800-645-3880'. Otherwise: 'Please let us know what assistance you require no later than 48 hours before departure' — without advance registration Lufthansa says neither the service nor travel on the booked flight can be guaranteed. Battery-powered mobility aids must also be cleared in advance by emailing the electric mobility device form to specialcases@dlh.de; no lead time is published for that.

One online form covers a whole itinerary including connections; it is available in German and English only and requires a completed booking. Lufthansa asks you to 'specify its dimensions, weight and special features (e.g. foldable, battery-powered, sports wheelchair)'.

'If your mobility aid is damaged during transport and we are responsible, we will waive the limits of liability set out in the Montreal Convention.' A loan wheelchair matching your functional and safety needs is provided while yours is returned, repaired or replaced (or your own hire cost is reimbursed within 30 days); Lufthansa pays for repair or replacement with a device of comparable function and safety, or deals directly with your preferred vendor.

'For passengers with reduced mobility, our aircraft have a specially developed onboard wheelchair that also enables use of the toilet on board... The latter has a seat width of 36 cm.' Be prepared to transfer from your own chair to it.

Cabin crew assist with boarding and disembarking, stowing carry-on baggage and aids, getting to and from the toilet using the onboard wheelchair, and preparing meals — but 'for safety reasons, they are not allowed to help you with any physical lifting or carrying'. A physical transfer by crew is therefore not offered: 'Do you require additional support? If so, you will need a travelling companion who is at least 18 years old.'

Exit-row seats are excluded on every aircraft type. B747-400/-8 upper-deck seats are unsuitable for WCHS and WCHC. On the A350-900 Allegris cabin, First 1K is not suitable for WCHC; Business Suites 2A–K and 8A–K, Privacy Seats 3/5/7/9/11 A+K and Extra Space Seats 3E, 5F, 9E, 11F are not suitable for WCHC; Economy rows 19–K, 26A–C and 26H–K are not suitable for WCHC, WCHS or WCHR.
