Powered wheelchairs & batteries
The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.
"Wheelchairs and mobility aids – powered with either non-spillable, spillable or collapsible lithium batteries" appear on KM Malta's list of restricted items that "require the airline's approval prior to flying". For a lithium chair the battery must be removed and carried in the cabin; for a battery over 160 Wh KM Malta tells wheelchair users to "contact our reservations office for assistance".

KM Malta Airlines (successor to Air Malta, launched 2024, all-A320-family) publishes clear lithium watt-hour rules for wheelchairs but very little about the handling of the chair itself: no gate delivery, no on-board aisle chair, no seating policy, no damage-liability statement, no dimensions. It requires a passenger who is not self-reliant to travel with a companion. Its EU obligations under Regulation (EC) 1107/2006 are cited on the assistance page in the assistance-dog section. Warning for researchers: the domain is kmmaltairlines.com (one 'a' in 'malt'), and www.kmmaltaairlines.com does not resolve. The Salesforce-hosted help centre (help.kmmaltairlines.com), which carries the Special Assistance Form and the 'Can I check in a wheelchair' article, would not render through either a direct fetch or the reader proxy, so those pages are cited only as contact links, not as fact sources.
