Powered wheelchairs & batteries
The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.
Accepted, but 'for wheelchairs and mobility aids, transport authorization issued by the airline is required': send the manufacturer's data sheet or manual to the Assistance Team at least 48 h before departure for pre-registration and review. Limits apply to battery power, overall weight and dimensions. 'If your mobility aid does not meet the safety requirements, it may not be accepted on board.'

"For wheelchairs and mobility aids, transport authorization issued by the airline is required": send the manufacturer's data sheet with the battery specifications to the Assistance Team at least 48 h before departure. Cells must be of a tested type (UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, sub-section 38.3). A battery removed by the user must not exceed 300 Wh (160 Wh each where the device needs two) and travels in the cabin in a protective case; if it is not removed there is no Wh limit.

'In the case the battery is removed by the user, if the mobility aid is specifically designed to allow its removal, the battery must not exceed 300 Wh. For any device that requires two batteries, each battery must not exceed 160 Wh.' Removed batteries travel in the cabin only, in a protective case.

Not published for mobility aids. The 100 Wh / 160 Wh table on ITA's batteries page is the general loose-battery and power-bank rule, not a wheelchair-battery rule, so it is not imported here.

'One (1) spare battery is permitted for wet batteries and two (2) are permitted for nickel-metal hydride batteries.' ITA publishes no spare count for lithium-ion wheelchair batteries.

Removal is not required: a sealed battery may stay attached where the chair can be loaded upright, and a lithium battery must be removed only where the mobility aid is specifically designed to allow it — it then travels in the cabin in a protective case.

"For wheelchairs and mobility aids, transport authorization issued by the airline is required" — the wheelchair's technical data sheet, including battery specifications, must reach the Assistance Team at least 48 h before departure. Where the chair has a sealed battery and can be placed in the hold upright, the battery may stay attached provided it is securely fastened, its electrical contacts are protected against short circuits and the electrical circuits are isolated; 1 spare wet battery or 2 nickel-metal hydride spares.

Unsealed (spillable) battery aids are "Permitted by ITA Airways. Further information will be provided by the relevant team at the time of booking." But "for wheelchairs and mobility aids, transport authorization issued by the airline is required": send the technical data sheet with battery specifications to the Assistance Team at least 48 h before departure. One (1) spare battery is permitted for wet batteries.

Not published; ITA does not say whether a powered chair is returned at the aircraft door.
Battery-powered personal transport devices (hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes, segways, electric monocycles) are banned outright whatever the battery, but that ban is separate from wheelchairs and mobility aids.
Manual wheelchairs
Manual wheelchairs are accepted: 'Your manual wheelchair will be collected at the check-in counter or at the time of boarding at the aircraft door to be loaded into the aircraft hold.'

Booking & cost
Assistance must be requested at booking or at the latest 48 hours before scheduled departure; the device's technical data sheet and battery specifications must reach the Assistance Team at least 48 h before departure. Stretcher and on-board oxygen therapy need 96 h; passenger-owned medical/postural devices 72 h.

Requests go to the Assistance Team by phone (country-specific number) or to prenotazione.assistenza@ita-airways.com. Online check-in is not available to passengers who need assistance — seats are assigned by the Assistance Team or at the airport, where you must arrive at least 2 h before departure.

Assistance is free at every airport under Regulation (EC) 1107/2006, and 'you can carry up to two mobility aids free of charge (e.g. wheel chair and walker)'. One 23 kg bag of medical supplies also travels free in the hold, as do two walking aids such as crutches or a walker.

ITA's general conditions of carriage limit liability for destruction, loss, damage or delay of baggage to 1,519 SDR per passenger; a higher limit applies only if you make a special declaration of interest at check-in and pay a supplementary sum. Loss of or damage to a wheelchair or other mobility aid on an ITA flight is claimed through ITA's dedicated PRM complaint form.

Per EC 1107/2006 Annex II the crew will accompany you from your seat to the restroom, but they are not obliged to lift you or to help you use the facilities, nor to administer food or medication; a passenger needing that help must travel with a companion.

Each aircraft has dedicated seats for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility, always next to the aisle, assigned during airport check-in. Emergency-exit seats cannot be assigned. Under ENAC regulation DG16/07/2021 a companion's seat next to the passenger carries no extra charge. On some aircraft the armrest between seats is not fully retractable.

Fleet detail. ITA's published 'Maximum wheelchair dimensions' (length x width x height, cm): A350 / A330-900 / A330-200 = 151 x 148 x 157; A321 / A320 / A319 = 151 x 148 x 109; A319 / A320 / A321 in bulk-load mode = 96 x 116 x 80; A220-100 / A220-300 = 96 x 116 x 80. The chair must be compatible with the cargo-door opening of the aircraft actually operating the flight.
Worth knowing
Everything here comes from ITA's own English pages. Watch three things. (1) There is no dedicated disability phone line — the 'Assistance Team' is the ordinary country call centre, and online check-in is blocked for anyone who has requested assistance, so seats are only assigned by phone or at the airport. (2) A powered chair needs airline-issued transport authorisation, with the manufacturer's data sheet sent at least 48 h ahead; ITA's published Battery-Powered Mobility Aids Form is dated 2026 on the accessibility page and 2024-04-05 on the batteries page (two different PDF URLs). (3) ITA flies to the USA but no US DOT Complaints Resolution Official / disability-assistance page was found — the US-market passenger-rights page only points back to EC 1107/2006. ITA is a Lufthansa Group member; no Lufthansa policy has been imported. On flights operated by a third-party carrier ITA warns that services such as the on-board wheelchair may be unavailable.
