Powered wheelchairs & batteries

The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.

Powered chairs accepted
Yes

Powered chairs are carried in the hold: "Electronic wheelchairs will be dismantled at our check-in counters" or "can be taken by the passenger till the aircraft", and "Acceptance of power driven wheelchairs/assistive devices using batteries shall be subject to applicable regulations governing carriage of dangerous goods." IndiGo's FAQ line that chairs with "lithium or non spillable battery shall not be allowed in flight" means they may not travel in the cabin — the same paragraph then sets out the watt-hour rules for carrying them.

Lithium-ion batteries
Yes

Lithium-ion powered wheelchairs are accepted in the hold. The battery may remain installed, or be removed by the user following the manufacturer's instructions where the design of the mobility aid does not provide adequate protection for the battery.

No powered-chair size limit is published. The tightest published IndiGo figure is the general checked-baggage limit on ATR aircraft (L 152 cm x W 58 cm x H 101 cm; 158 cm total L+W+H elsewhere), which the airline does not state applies to mobility aids. See aircraft_hold_note.

Manual wheelchairs

Manual chairs accepted

Yes

"A Passenger requiring a fully collapsible wheelchair and / or a pair of crutches and / or braces or other prosthetic device may board such items as Cabin Baggage, provided that the passenger is dependent upon them." Size limit for a checked manual chair
Not published

No wheelchair-specific size limit is published. IndiGo's general checked-baggage rule is a maximum 158 cm (62 in) total L+W+H, and on ATR aircraft L 152 cm x W 58 cm x H 101 cm — but IndiGo does not say this applies to a mobility aid, and it states assistive devices are not part of the checked-baggage limit. Booking & cost

Advance notice requiredhours before scheduled departure
48h

"we request you to notify us of your special needs/wheelchair request at least forty eight (48) hours prior to the schedule departure" — IndiGo frames this as a request, not a hard cut-off. Wheelchair assistance is first-come, first-served subject to inventory. Groups of ten or more requiring wheelchairs "may contact us ... at least forty eight (48) hours before scheduled departure". Customers bringing their own spinal support equipment "can call our call centre ... at least seven (7) working days prior to departure". Report at the counter 2 hours before departure.

If they damage your chair
Compensation by whichever party is responsible (airline, airport operator or ground handler), but capped at IndiGo's Conditions of Carriage limit; IndiGo disclaims liability for damage caused while it dismantles or reassembles the chair

Disability Assistance page: loss or damage of wheelchairs, mobility equipment or assistive devices while handled at the airport or transported on board "will be compensated by the airline, airport operator, the relevant ground handling agency or organization which is responsible for such loss" — but the same page also says "IndiGo shall not be liable for any damage arising while handling the wheelchair". The FAQ adds that mobility aids in checked luggage are "not covered for anything more than the maximum liability under IndiGo's Conditions of Carriage".

Our cabin crew can provide assistance in moving to and from the lavatory door, but will not be able to assist you inside the lavatory." No

No physical transfer: "our cabin crew are not authorized to give special assistance (e.g. lifting, etc.). Cabin crew are trained only in first aid". Published crew help is limited to safety briefings, stowing and retrieving carry-on and assistive devices and opening food; IndiGo "regrets its inability" to assist with personal care and toileting. The wheelchair attendant service runs only "from check-in counter till the gate or the aircraft door", and a customer who cannot reach an exit unaided is told to travel with a safety assistant.

Fleet detail. IndiGo publishes no wheelchair size limit. Its general checked-baggage rule is a maximum 158 cm (62 in) total L+W+H, and on ATR aircraft (the turboprop regional fleet) L 152 cm x W 58 cm x H 101 cm — the tightest published hold constraint on the network. IndiGo does not state that this applies to mobility aids, and elsewhere says assistive devices are not part of the checked-baggage limit, so a large power chair on an ATR sector should be cleared with the call centre in advance.

Worth knowing

IndiGo's battery rules are clear and complete — installed lithium has no watt-hour limit, a removed battery is capped at 300 Wh, spares are one at 300 Wh or two at 160 Wh, wet-cell chairs are refused, and the user/manufacturer's manual must be carried. Three things a human should re-check. (1) The FAQ sentence "Electronic powered wheelchair(s) with lithium or non spillable battery shall not be allowed in flight" reads, in isolation, as a refusal; in context (the same paragraph sets out how such chairs are carried, and chairs are dismantled at check-in) it plainly means 'not in the cabin'. It is badly drafted and worth a written confirmation. (2) Cabin stowage: the non-standard baggage FAQ says a fully collapsible wheelchair may be boarded as cabin baggage, while the disability pages say a personal chair is taken at the aircraft and stowed in the hold. (3) Damage liability is stated three different ways across two pages (responsible party compensates / IndiGo not liable for handling damage / capped at Conditions of Carriage). No wheelchair-specific dimension or weight limit exists anywhere on the site; the only relevant published figure is the general checked-baggage limit, which is L 152 x W 58 x H 101 cm on ATR aircraft.
