Powered wheelchairs & batteries

The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.

Same as manual: you may use your own powered aid to the gate where airport facilities allow, check it at the gate, and it is delivered back to the gate on arrival. EVA asks departing passengers to reach the gate early to check the aid in smoothly.

EVA's guideline points travellers to Taiwan's Civil Aviation Administration dangerous-goods page (https://www.caa.gov.tw/article.aspx?a=1273&lang=1). On codeshare flights EVA tells you to confirm lithium-battery specification and quantity with the operating carrier. The pilot in command is informed of the location of an installed battery or of a removed lithium battery carried in the cabin.

Inform reservations staff of your condition and equipment when booking. For a battery-powered aid EVA asks for: foldable or non-foldable; total weight and dimensions (folded, if foldable); number of installed batteries; battery type and, for lithium, the watt-hour rating; and battery/wheelchair brand, model, photos and test reports sent by e-mail. "After approval, prepare a copy of the battery test report for airport inspection." A MEDIF may be required depending on your condition.

Worth knowing

EVA's battery rules live on the Wheelchair Services page and in a separate 7-page "Battery-Powered Mobility Aids Transport Guidelines" deck dated 22 October 2025 — the numbers agree. EVA is explicit that its own site carries no watt-hour cap for a battery that stays installed, but warns that some airports refuse lithium batteries over 300 Wh, so a >300 Wh installed battery is an airport-by-airport risk rather than an EVA refusal. The A321-200 is the weak spot of the fleet: no onboard wheelchair, no personal transfer kit and no designated in-cabin wheelchair storage. EVA has Complaint Resolution Officials at every US airport it serves and at Taoyuan. The Chinese-language page carries the identical per-aircraft table.
