Powered wheelchairs & batteries
The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.
A battery-powered wheelchair is treated as a dangerous good needing Batik Air's approval: "Below are some examples of dangerous good items that require Batik Air's approval before you are permitted to carry for your trip: i. Battery-powered wheelchair..." The baggage page accepts lithium chairs "by complying to the safety handling guidelines. This requires advance notification to the airline for the necessary preparations. The battery must not exceed 300Wh." "Baby strollers and wheelchairs are carried free and will not be calculated against the free baggage allowance. They may be used up to the boarding gate. Passengers MUST SIGN the Limited Release Tag (LRT) at the check-in counter." The FAQ confirms: "Can I use my own perambulator/manual wheelchair until the aircraft door? Answer: Yes. The FAQ answer to "How much will I be charged for a wheelchair?" links a rate-card image whose two columns are headed only "Below 45 minutes" and "Above 45 minutes" — the table never says what the 45 minutes measures, so a human should confirm it means flight duration. Rates by origin: Domestic USD 40 / 55; Others (international) USD 40 / 55; Japan USD 45 / 60; Taiwan, China, India except Delhi & Mumbai, Bangladesh USD 30 / 45; Saudi Arabia SAR 100 either way; transit in Malaysia USD 20 / 35. Australia, Hong Kong and Delhi & Mumbai are "Free of Charge". Payment is made at an Airport Ticketing Office and "the request for wheelchair is also subjected to availability". Carriage of the passenger's OWN chair is nonetheless free and outside the baggage allowance, which is why fee_charged is recorded as false — read the fee_charged detail. (2) THE POWERED-CHAIR POLICY CONTRADICTS ITSELF. The baggage page (last updated Apr 2026) accepts wheelchairs containing lithium batteries up to 300 Wh with advance notification and correct packaging/markings, and the DGR FAQ lists a battery-powered wheelchair as an item needing Batik Air's approval; but another FAQ answer says "Powered/motorised wheelchairs contain wet cell batteries that are categorised as dangerous goods and thus are not permitted to be loaded on the aircraft." Get written confirmation before flying. ALSO: every checked wheelchair goes on a signed Limited Release Tag, the device Batik Air uses to disclaim damage liability — for an £8,000 chair that is a serious exposure.
