Handi Austral is a genuine dedicated disability channel with its own phone line, email and opening hours — but it is a registration scheme: to enrol you must hold a valid French carte d'invalidité, carte de priorité or invalidité de guerre and present it with photo ID. Assistance itself must be declared to the ordinary commercial line 0825 013 012 at least 48 h before departure.

Powered wheelchairs & batteries
The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.
Handi Austral states « Gratuité du transport des batteries et des fauteuils électriques » — electric wheelchairs and their batteries are carried, free of charge. Needs must be signalled at least 48 h before departure and the number of PRM per flight can be limited by aircraft type.

Handi Austral says electric wheelchairs and their batteries travel free but names no chemistry; the dangerous-goods page has no mobility-aid lithium entry, only a general statement that lithium-ion batteries over 160 Wh are prohibited on aircraft (see the watt-hour fields).

Air Austral's dangerous-goods page lists, under « Objets interdits en cabine »: « Les fauteuils roulants équipés d'accumulateurs à électrolyte liquide inversables. Les accumulateurs ne sont acceptés que par le service Fret Air Austral. » Liquid-electrolyte wheelchair batteries are therefore routed through Air Austral's cargo service rather than carried as passenger baggage.

Worth knowing
Sources are French (an English mirror of the assistance page exists but is thinner). Strong contact story — Handi Austral has a real dedicated line (0825 950 974 / +33 825 950 974), an email (handiaustral@air-austral.com) and published hours — but weak policy detail: no watt-hour figure, no weight or size limit, no gate-delivery, no on-board wheelchair statement. Things a human should re-check: (1) the dangerous-goods page's blanket « lithium-ion > 160 Wh, contenues dans l'appareil ou de rechange, sont interdites dans les avions » has no mobility-aid exemption on the page, which conflicts with the usual IATA 300 Wh mobility-aid allowance and with Handi Austral's promise of free battery carriage — do NOT assume 300 Wh here; (2) « accumulateurs à électrolyte liquide inversables » in the cabin-prohibition list is ambiguous wording (inversable = non-spillable) and the follow-on sentence sends the batteries to Air Austral Fret; (3) Handi Austral's free second mobility aid and extra bag are advantages of a registration scheme requiring a French disability card, and do not apply on Light fares, connecting flights on other airlines, or EWA Air and Tsaradia flights; (4) Air Austral's own digital-accessibility declaration (12/03/2025 audit by AccessiWay) rates air-austral.com at 42.37% of RGAA 4.1.2 criteria and states it is « Non conforme » — the booking site itself may be hard to use with assistive technology, which matters because assistance cannot be requested online anyway.
