Aeroitalia publishes no special-assistance email address; the named channels are the reduced-mobility phone line, the website Assistance Chat Box and the contact form. A completed and signed MEDIF Form A must be handed in at the airport check-in desk when special assistance is required; MEDIF Form B (doctor-signed) is used when medical clearance is needed. Online check-in is not available to passengers who have requested assistance — seats are assigned at the airport desk, and you must be at the check-in desk 2 hours before departure.

Powered wheelchairs & batteries
The part that goes wrong. Battery chemistry and watt-hours decide whether your chair flies, and the rules differ depending on whether the battery can be removed.
Accepted only after Aeroitalia has vetted the device: 'if you use an electric wheelchair it must be IATA-approved', and you must send the brand and model, battery type and battery details (capacity, voltage) through the contact form or Assistance Chat Box 'so that we can verify whether the item is safe for transport'. 'If the mobility aid does not meet safety requirements, it may not be boarded.'

Lithium-ion mobility aids are carried, treated as hazardous and subject to conditions: 'The batteries used must be of a type tested (UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, subsection 38.3).'

'Se la batteria non viene rimossa, non c'è limite di Wh' — 'If the battery is not removed, there is no Wh limit.' Aeroitalia states this explicitly, so a battery that stays in the chair has no published watt-hour ceiling.

'If the battery is removable by the user, if the mobility aid is specifically designed to allow removal, the battery must not exceed 300 Wh, or for a device with two batteries required for operation, each battery must not exceed 160 Wh.' A removed battery must be carried in the passenger cabin in a protective case.

'Aeroitalia allows the transport of one (1) spare battery of 300 Wh or two (2) batteries of max 160 Wh.' Spare batteries must be carried exclusively in the cabin, in a protective case.

One spare of up to 300 Wh, or two spares of max 160 Wh each — the maximum permitted count is therefore 2, at the lower watt-hour rating. Both removed and spare batteries travel in the cabin in a protective case. A separate line for non-lithium aids allows one spare for wet batteries and two for nickel-metal hydride.

Removal is not required. For sealed batteries 'the battery can remain attached to the wheelchair/electric device' where the chair can be positioned vertically in the hold; for lithium, 'if the battery is not removed, there is no Wh limit'. If the battery is removed it must not exceed 300 Wh and must travel in the cabin in a protective case.

Sealed (non-spillable) batteries are accepted. 'In cases where the wheelchair or mobility aid powered by sealed batteries can be positioned vertically in the hold, the battery can remain attached to the wheelchair/electric device' provided the battery is securely attached, the terminals are protected from short circuits and the electrical circuits are isolated.

'When booking the service, we ask you to provide our Assistance Chat Box (or your travel agency if you booked through one) with the wheelchair's technical specifications, including battery details.' The FAQ asks for brand name and model, battery type and battery details (capacity, voltage). Lithium batteries must be of a UN 38.3-tested type. A signed MEDIF Form A must also be handed in at the airport check-in desk.

Not published — Aeroitalia sets no maximum dimensions for a powered wheelchair. The only physical test it states is whether a sealed-battery chair 'can be positioned vertically in the hold'.
Not published — Aeroitalia sets no weight limit for a powered wheelchair.
Not published — Aeroitalia does not say where a powered chair is returned on arrival.
Internal inconsistency worth checking with the airline: spillable ('non-sealed') battery wheelchairs are refused outright, yet the sealed-battery section immediately below then states 'It is allowed to carry one (1) spare battery for wet batteries and two (2) for nickel-metal hydride batteries.' The same wording appears in Italian in the 2026 Service Charter, so it is not a translation error.
Manual wheelchairs
'Your manual wheelchair will be collected at the check-in desk or at the boarding gate to be loaded into the aircraft's hold.' Carriage in the hold is free. Aeroitalia notes that for safety it accepts only a limited number of reduced-mobility passengers per flight, depending on aircraft type and configuration.

Aeroitalia states the manual wheelchair 'will be collected at the check-in desk or at the boarding gate to be loaded into the aircraft's hold', and the FAQ says wheelchairs 'can be carried free of charge in the aircraft hold'. No in-cabin stowage of a folding chair is offered. Crutches and walking sticks may be carried in the cabin.

Not published — Aeroitalia describes no in-cabin wheelchair stowage, so there is no cabin-closet dimension to publish.
Not published — Aeroitalia publishes no maximum wheelchair dimensions, and no per-fleet hold-door figures for its Boeing 737-700/-800 or ATR 72-600 aircraft.
Not published — Aeroitalia publishes no weight limit for a checked wheelchair or mobility aid.
Not published. Aeroitalia says the chair is collected at the check-in desk or at the boarding gate, but says nothing about whether it is returned at the aircraft door on arrival.

Crutches or walking sticks may be carried in the cabin. Disability supports or aids that have to be attached to a seat backrest are not accepted for safety reasons. Contradiction to check: the reduced-mobility FAQ says 'stretchers are not permitted on board because of limited space', while the assistance page and Service Charter say a stretcher service is available on flights to and from Sardinia with at least 120 hours' notice.
Booking & cost
'The service must be requested when booking the flight or later by accessing the "MY BOOKING" section, no later than 48 hours before flight departure.' The reduced-mobility FAQ repeats 48 hours for the wheelchair service. Different deadlines apply to other services: stretcher (Sardinia routes only) at least 120 hours, portable oxygen concentrator at least 4 days.

'During flight booking, inform AEROITALIA of your need to travel with a wheelchair, electric or foldable, or any other mobility aid.' Bookings made through an agency must be handled by the agency. Aeroitalia asks for the wheelchair's technical specification (brand, model, battery type, capacity and voltage) via the Assistance Chat Box or contact form so it can check the item is safe to carry.

Not published on any Aeroitalia page reachable from outside the site's JavaScript footer. The 'Transport General Conditions' footer link could not be resolved — every candidate URL returned 404 or 403 — and the 2026 Service Charter contains no baggage-liability limit or mobility-aid damage rule. A human should retrieve the Condizioni Generali di Trasporto in a browser.
On board
'All our aircraft are equipped with a manual wheelchair that can be used to move from the passenger's seat to the toilets.' But the 2026 Service Charter warns that 'if the flight is operated by a third-party carrier, some assistance services (e.g. onboard wheelchairs) may not be available or may differ' — Aeroitalia runs part of its programme on wet-leased aircraft, so the aisle chair is not guaranteed on every flight number.

'Our onboard toilets are equipped with handrails to facilitate their use for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility.' Aeroitalia does not claim a wheelchair-accessible lavatory on its Boeing 737 or ATR 72 fleet.

Under EC Regulation 1107/06 Annex II, cabin crew will escort a passenger 'from their seat to the toilet (there is no obligation to lift the passenger or assist in using the facilities)' and will open food and beverage packaging. All aircraft carry a manual on-board wheelchair for the seat-to-toilet journey. Crew are not obliged to lift a passenger.

'Once onboard, passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility will be accommodated by staff in dedicated seats where crew instructions can be heard and seen during all flight phases. For safety reasons, it will not be possible to occupy a seat in rows corresponding to emergency exits.' The reduced-mobility FAQ adds: 'I passeggeri a mobilità ridotta non possono essere seduti vicino a un'uscita di emergenza o su un posto al corridoio' (not near an emergency exit or in an aisle seat).

Fleet detail. Fleet per the 2026 Service Charter: 1 Boeing 737-700, 10 Boeing 737-800 and 2 ATR 72-600. Aeroitalia publishes no hold-door aperture or maximum wheelchair size for any of them; the only stated physical test is whether a sealed-battery chair can be stood vertically in the hold.
Worth knowing
Aeroitalia's battery rules are unusually explicit for a carrier this size and are the best part of the record: no watt-hour limit at all if the battery stays in the chair, 300 Wh if it is removed, and one 300 Wh or two 160 Wh spares in the cabin in a protective case. Spillable ('non-sealed') battery chairs are refused outright. Everything physical is missing: no maximum wheelchair weight, no maximum dimensions, no hold-door figures for the 737 or ATR 72 fleet, and no damage-liability limit — the 'Transport General Conditions' footer link is JavaScript-rendered and could not be resolved to a working URL. Three things a human should re-check: (1) the FAQ says stretchers are not allowed on board while the assistance page and Service Charter advertise a stretcher service on Sardinia routes with 120 h notice; (2) the sealed-battery section allows 'one (1) spare battery for wet batteries' even though wet-battery chairs are refused — the same contradiction appears in the Italian charter text; (3) the Service Charter warns that on flights operated by a third-party carrier some services, explicitly including on-board wheelchairs, 'may not be available or may differ', so the 'all our aircraft have an on-board wheelchair' claim does not cover wet-leased flying. Aeroitalia also caps the number of reduced-mobility passengers per flight by aircraft type, and online check-in is disabled once assistance is requested. English and Italian pages were both read; the Italian text of the 2026 Service Charter was used to confirm that battery removal is optional, not mandatory.
